O\u00f1ati: A land full of value and tradition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

O\u00f1ati<\/strong> (O\u00f1ate<\/em> in some older and Spanish-language texts) is a town in the Historical Territory (province) of Gipuzkoa<\/strong>, within the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country. Belonging to the Upper Deba River region, our town holds the title of \u201dvery noble and loyal town.\u201d One of the curious facts about its history is that it was a powerful and stately villa <\/em>that became a County, and was not integrated into Gipuzkoa province until 1845. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This beautiful municipality which has seen us start up and grow into today\u2019s ULMA, was, in the days of the Counts, first governed by the Vela family and later by the Guevara family of Araba (Alava). The Counts of O\u00f1ati had authority over the territory, with the power to collect taxes, appoint the mayor and the abbot of the church, exercise justice, and captain the troops, among many other rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Guevara family held the Se\u00f1or\u00edo de O\u00f1ate<\/em> (Lordship of O\u00f1ati) from 1149 until the town\u2019s annexation to Gipuzkoa in 1845. In the annexation protocol, various conditions set out by the Count of O\u00f1ati were accepted, including the construction of a road from Ormaiztegi to O\u00f1ati, an increase in the maintenance concession to the university and an annual income of 20,000 reales<\/em> payable personally to the Count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sancti Spiritus University<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is one of those jewels of the Renaissance<\/strong> for which you should reserve part of your time when you visit our area. Did you know that the University of O\u00f1ati is considered the most representative building of the Renaissance period in the Basque Country? This is due both to its beautiful architecture and to its being one of the most significant institutions in the spirit of the Renaissance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Michael\u2019s Parish<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Here we have a clear example of a church that has been built over the centuries, mixing elements of various styles. The Parroquia de San Miguel<\/em> is a 15th-century Gothic monument<\/strong> that sits in perfect harmony with the landscape of O\u00f1ati. It is a place you should not miss during your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bidaurreta Monastery<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This Gothic-Renaissance building, built at the beginning of the 16th century, was founded by Juan L\u00f3pez de Lazarraga, secretary of the Royal Council and Chief Accountant of the Catholic Monarchs. Today, this magnificent religious work forms a cloistered convent for the Poor Clare nuns of the Franciscan order<\/strong>, whose vow of poverty is perfectly reflected in the building\u2019s sobriety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palaces and civil buildings<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

O\u00f1ati is a very nice place to simply wander around and even get lost, thanks to its abundance of artistic and architectural styles where tradition and vanguard are mixed.
